This week, episode 178 of Listeners to Leads is about discovering your unique podcasting voice!

Key Takeaways:

  • Common obstacles that prevent people from starting podcasts.

Are you sitting on a brilliant podcast idea but letting your “lizard brain” and imposter syndrome hold you back from pressing that “publish” button? You’re not alone. In fact, it’s a common challenge that many aspiring podcasters face.

I recently had the pleasure of chatting with podcasting mentor and multi-show creator J. Rosemarie Francis, and she shared some incredibly valuable insights on overcoming the mindset obstacles that can prevent us from sharing our unique voices with the world.

J. Rosemarie’s Podcasting Journey: From 6 Years of Procrastination to 3 Successful Shows

J. Rosemarie’s podcasting journey is one filled with relatable struggles and hard-won lessons. She first had the idea for her solo moms-focused podcast, Solo Moms Talk, way back in 2013. But it took her a full 6 years before she finally pressed publish.

“I had lizard brain for six years, and the imposter syndrome is just a monster if you let it,” J. Rosemarie shared. Sound familiar?

It’s a common problem that plagues many would-be podcasters – that nagging voice in our heads telling us we’re not good enough, we don’t have the right equipment, or our idea isn’t unique enough. J certainly battled those demons, but she eventually found the courage to overcome them.

The turning point came when J. Rosemarie attended a Tony Robbins event and was inspired to finally take the leap. “I came back, I came back home, and did press publish and so, so that’s solo mom’s talk,” she explained.

Once J. Rosemarie got that first podcast off the ground, she discovered a true passion for the medium. She went on to launch two more shows – Tools of the Podcast Trade, which focuses on the technical side of podcasting and Abandoned Daughters of Caribbean Moms, a deeply personal project exploring her own family history.

The Power of Mindset and Mission

So what was the key to J. Rosemarie’s podcasting success after years of procrastination? According to her, it all comes down to mindset.

“The real problem is your mind is telling you you can’t do it. You don’t have enough. You’re just not ready, so you focus on other things,” she shared.

Rather than getting bogged down in the technical details or comparing herself to big-name podcasters, J. Rosemarie realized that the biggest obstacle standing in her way was her own self-doubt. Once she was able to overcome that mental block, the rest fell into place.

But J. Rosemarie didn’t just rely on a mindset shift – she also emphasized the importance of having a clear mission and purpose for your podcast. As she put it, “Aim for that message also encourage people to write a mission statement for the podcast. Who is it for, why you’re doing it, and what are you going to be talking about? That mission statement will be your guide, especially when things get rough.”

This mission-driven approach is something I’ve seen work incredibly well, both for my own podcasts and for the clients I’ve supported through Galati Media. When you have a deep, meaningful “why” behind your show, it becomes much easier to stay motivated and push through the inevitable challenges that arise.

The Opportunities in Podcasting are Endless

Another key insight from J? The podcasting landscape is riper than ever for new voices and niche audiences.

“There is so much opportunity in podcasting right now. It’s just unbelievable for podcasters,” she shared.

Gone are the days when only big-name celebrities and media giants could break through. Podcasting has become an increasingly democratized medium, allowing anyone with a unique perspective and the willingness to put in the work to build an engaged audience.

In fact, J. Rosemarie shared a story about a mentee of hers who was podcasting in Swahili about tech topics in Africa. Despite the niche nature of the show, J encouraged him to reach out to local tech businesses as potential sponsors – and within just a couple of days, he had secured a sponsor deal.

The lesson? Your podcast doesn’t have to appeal to the masses to be successful. In fact, some of the most impactful and profitable shows are the ones that laser-focus on a specific, underserved audience. As long as you know who you’re talking to and what problem you’re solving for them, the opportunities are endless.

Don’t Hide Your Light Under a Bushel

Perhaps the most powerful takeaway from my conversation with J. Rosemarie was her impassioned plea to aspiring podcasters: “If you’re out there and you’re thinking about a podcast, please don’t sit on your light. Please don’t hide that light under a bushel. Please let that light shine here because there’s somebody stumbling around in the darkness waiting.”

Those words really struck a chord with me. How many brilliant, world-changing ideas are we collectively sitting on because we’re too afraid to put ourselves and our messages out there? How many people are desperately searching for the very information, inspiration, or community that our podcasts could provide?

As J. Rosemarie so eloquently stated, there is someone out there in the darkness, waiting for your light to guide them. Your unique voice, your personal story, your specialized expertise – these are the things that have the power to transform lives. But only if you’re willing to share them. Don’t let fear of the unknown, imposter syndrome, or any other mental block hold you back. Your podcast deserves to exist, and there are people out there who need to hear it.

Ready to Take the Leap? Here’s How to Get Started

If J. Rosemarie’s words have inspired you to finally start that podcast you’ve been dreaming about, here are a few tips to help you get the ball rolling:

  • Develop a clear mission statement. As J. Rosemarie emphasized, knowing your “why” – who you’re serving, what problem you’re solving, and what you’ll be talking about – will be crucial for staying motivated and focused.
  • Find a supportive community. Whether it’s joining a podcasting mastermind, connecting with other creators in your niche, or working with a coach like myself, having people in your corner can make all the difference when the going gets tough.
  • Start small and focus on progress, not perfection. Don’t let the desire for audio perfection or a massive audience stop you from just getting started. Focus on taking consistent, imperfect action.
  • Identify and address your mindset blocks. What fears or limiting beliefs are holding you back? Challenge those thoughts and replace them with empowering beliefs about your abilities and the value you have to offer.

The podcasting world is waiting for your light to shine. So what are you waiting for? Reach out, and let’s chat about how to turn your podcast dreams into reality.
