Stop the Social Media Slog and Find Joy in Podcasting Again
Stop the Social Media Slog and Find Joy in Podcasting Again
Are you tired of feeling like you’re on a hamster wheel, constantly creating social media posts for your podcast that lead nowhere? You spend hours designing graphics, writing clever captions, and tracking trends, only to see the same low engagement and zero new clients. Sound familiar? I get it. After releasing hundreds of podcast episodes over the years, I started to feel sick of the whole social media game. It made me wonder: Is promoting your podcast on social media still worth your time? This article is for the purpose-driven podcaster who is feeling burned out and wants to know if there’s a better way to grow their audience and attract clients without the constant hustle. You deserve to put your time and effort into things that actually light you up and bring you results. Let’s look at why I decided to completely stop social media promotion for my podcast and the three powerful ways I’m growing my show instead.
The Truth About Social Media ROI for Your Podcast
Most podcasters treat social media as a must-do, but how often do you stop to check if it’s actually working? For me, the answer became clear: my social media effort was giving me a zero return on investment (ROI). Clients were not hiring me because of my Instagram posts, and I wasn’t seeing any real jump in people finding my show through those platforms.
You need to ask yourself honestly: Are you promoting on social media because you truly enjoy it and it’s working, or are you just checking a box because you think you “have to”? When you’re running a business, every minute and every dollar counts. If a task isn’t bringing you a good return, it’s taking time away from activities that could be. Putting energy into something that gives you a lack of enjoyment and no results is a sure way to feel like your business is on fire.
Quick Wins: Stop the Hustle
- Conclusion: If your social media efforts don’t bring you joy or leads, it’s time for a change.
- Track Your Last Client: When was the last time a client hired you directly because of a social media post? Track that to see your real ROI.
- Reclaim Your Time: Stop spending hours creating content for platforms that feel like a chore.
- Focus on Fulfillment: Shift your time to tasks that excite you and give you high fulfillment.
Strategy 1: Become the Expert with Workshops and Speaking
Instead of fighting the algorithms on social media, put yourself directly in front of your ideal listener and client. The first way I’m replacing my social media time is by focusing on speaking engagements and virtual workshops.
Why does this work? When you speak at a virtual conference or host a focused workshop, you show up as the expert. You’re giving clear, valuable, and specialized training to a captive audience who is already interested in your topic. This is a high-fulfillment activity for me—I leave these energized and excited about encouraging others to start or grow their show. It’s a direct way to generate leads, unlike a fleeting Instagram story. You can do this by pitching yourself to speak at online events or by creating your own free training sessions for your community.
Quick Wins: Speak Your Way to Growth
- Conclusion: Speaking and teaching position you as the expert and drive better lead generation.
- Pitch Virtual Events: Look for online conferences or groups that fit your niche and offer to speak or teach a specialized topic.
- Host Free Workshops: Set up your own free workshops to offer deep value and turn listeners into leads.
- Track Conversions: Monitor how many people sign up for your free offers or book calls after attending your sessions.
Strategy 2: Guesting Is Your Number One Growth Hack
If you want to know the absolute best way to grow your show, this is it: podcast guesting. Being a guest on other people’s podcasts is the most effective way to reach new listeners who are already in the mindset of listening to a show.
Think about it: you get to offer value to a new audience, and if they love what you say, they will naturally want to check out your show for more. I have seen it happen again and again: when I focus on being a guest, my show’s listenership goes up. This is a win-win: you provide value to the host’s audience, and you bring new, highly interested listeners to your own content. It’s a much more direct line from “hearing about you” to “listening to your show” than any social media clip could be.
Quick Wins: Maximize Guest Appearances
- Conclusion: Guesting on podcasts consistently is the most reliable way to grow your listenership.
- Offer Massive Value: Focus on being so helpful and valuable in the interview that listeners have to check out your show.
- Batch Your Pitching: Dedicate time to find and pitch yourself to shows that have your ideal listener.
- Focus on the Listener Journey: Make sure the interviews you do are a clear pathway for listeners to move over to your podcast.
Strategy 3: Optimize the Channels You Own
Why build your house on rented land? Social media platforms can change their rules or algorithms overnight, but your email list and website are channels you fully control. This is the third area of focus for my experiment.
Instead of posting, I’m dedicating time to optimizing my website and being more active on my email list. Your website should be a well-oiled machine that turns casual visitors into leads. Your email list is where you can have direct, personal conversations with your biggest fans. If they follow you there, they will always know what the latest episode is, no algorithm needed. This focus is about building a solid, reliable foundation for your business that drives results without the constant distraction of a newsfeed.
Quick Wins: Build Your Foundation
- Conclusion: Own your audience by focusing on your email list and website, not borrowed platforms.
- Clean Up Your Website: Make sure your website clearly tells people where to go to listen to your podcast and sign up for your free offers.
- Prioritize Your Email List: Commit to being more active and valuable in your newsletter, giving subscribers the first look at your new episodes.
- Track Direct Traffic: Monitor your website analytics to see if you’re getting more direct traffic and leads from your free offers.
The Big Idea: Podcast with Purpose and Profit
You don’t have to stay on a treadmill that isn’t working. My Q4 experiment is proof that you can choose to put your time and energy into high-fulfillment, high-ROI activities that actually move your business forward. This isn’t just about feeling better; it’s about making smart, data-driven decisions that are going to get you the leads you want.
Ready to try your own experiment?
Here’s how to start:
- Audit Your Time: Look at what you are doing in your business or life that makes you say, “Ugh, I have to do this thing”.
- Make the Cut: Decide if you can actually drop that task—or if you can swap it for something else that brings you joy and results.
- Choose a New Focus: Pick one of the three strategies—speaking, guesting, or optimizing your own channels—to focus on instead.
- Track Your Results: Be sure to watch your metrics like leads, client calls, and listener numbers to see your true ROI.
It’s time to stop letting a lack of enjoyment be what holds you back. Focus on what lights you up and watch your podcast and business grow in the right direction!
