Liberating Business Owners from Chaos with Scott Beebe
Are you constantly distracted by the “latest, loudest voices” in your industry, feeling like you’re not making progress in your business or content creation? If so, you’re not alone. Many entrepreneurs and business owners struggle with the phenomenon of “Latest Loudest Voice Disease” (LLVD).
I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Scott Beebe, co-founder of Business on Purpose, to discuss how he and his team are helping business owners break free from the LLVD and build sustainable, purpose-driven companies. As the host of the Listeners to Leads podcast, I was particularly interested in learning about Scott’s approach to using a podcast as part of his marketing strategy.
Shifting Away from Vanity Metrics
One of the key insights Scott shared was the importance of shifting away from a focus on vanity metrics, such as podcast downloads or social media followers. “If we looked at our podcast and went, ‘Oh, what’s our downloads? What’s our downloads,’ then we’re off the mission at that point,” he explained.
Instead, Scott and his team have centered their podcast around their core mission: liberating business owners from chaos. “Our mission has become our centralized piece, to be able to look at that ultimately gets us to our vision, which is our destination down there,” Scott said.
By keeping their mission at the forefront, the Business on Purpose team has been able to create content that truly resonates with their target audience, rather than chasing the latest trends or trying to “game the system” for better metrics.
Leveraging In-Person Connections
Another crucial aspect of Scott’s approach is the way he integrates his podcast with in-person speaking engagements and relationship-building. He refers to this as the “air support” and “ground game” of his marketing strategy.
“Marketing is dating,” Scott explained. “That’s where we go. ‘Hey, are we bringing value?’ And then when somebody hears us at a speaking engagement, or they hear us in one on one, or direct referral, whatever, now they go out online and they can find us with some presence here.”
By focusing on building genuine connections and providing value through live events and personal interactions, Scott and his team have been able to grow their email list to over 41,000 subscribers – a far cry from the 2,000 they had in their first seven years of business.
Adapting Your Content Strategy
One of the most valuable insights Scott shared was the importance of adapting your content strategy to what works best for you and your business goals, rather than blindly following the latest advice from “experts.”
“We’ve just allowed it to become what it needed to become at the time we needed it to become,” Scott said, reflecting on the evolution of their podcast. From scripted interviews to spontaneous monologues, the Business on Purpose team has been willing to experiment and pivot their approach as needed.
This flexibility has allowed them to create content that truly serves their audience, whether that’s answering client questions, highlighting their customers, or sharing insights from their own experiences.
“Whenever a client, prospect, whatever asks us a question, ‘Hey, who do you work with? Hey, how does coaching work? Hey, what’s the difference between coaching and consulting?’ Hey, when you talk about PNLs, what does that mean? Anytime somebody asks a question, there’s the title for your next piece of content,” Scott explained.
By tapping into the real-world questions and pain points of their target market, the Business on Purpose team has been able to build a library of valuable, SEO-friendly content that attracts their ideal clients.
Breaking Free from the Noise
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the constant barrage of advice and “best practices” in the online business world, take a page from Scott’s playbook. Focus on your mission, build genuine connections, and adapt your content strategy to what works best for you and your audience.
Remember, the “latest, loudest voice” is often just noise – it’s up to you to tune it out and stay true to your own path.
As Scott so eloquently put it, “If we looked at our podcast and went, ‘Oh, what’s our downloads? What’s our downloads,’ then we’re off the mission at that point. Because our mission is not to liberate 6 million owners from chaos, it’s just to liberate owners from chaos. And so if we’re having the privilege to be able to do that, then we’re accomplishing that.”
