The Power of Email Marketing: Myths and Realities with Kendra Corman
As a podcaster, you know how important it is to have a strong email marketing strategy to connect with your audience and turn listeners into leads. But with all the noise and misinformation out there, it can be tough to know where to focus your efforts.
That’s why I was thrilled to sit down with marketing expert Kendra Corman on the Listeners to Leads podcast. Kendra has over 20 years of experience helping small businesses and entrepreneurs grow through smart, effective marketing – and she’s here to set the record straight on some of the biggest email marketing myths.
Myth #1: Email Marketing is Dead
“The biggest myth out there is that email marketing is dead. That’s my favorite. It’s not, it’s not dead. It’s alive and kicking,” Kendra shared. In fact, email marketing has one of the highest returns on investment of any marketing channel, with an average $42 return for every $1 spent.
“None of the other channels will return you $42 for every dollar you invest, none other than I’m aware of,” Kendra explained. “And I’m a fan of direct mail, sometimes too. None of it has the return of email.”
So if you’ve been neglecting your email list in favor of social media or other tactics, it’s time to make email a priority again. The key is to focus on building genuine relationships with your subscribers, not just growing your numbers.
Myth #2: Deliverability is a Lost Cause
Another common email marketing myth is that deliverability is a lost cause – that spam filters and platform changes have made it impossible to reliably reach your audience. But Kendra says that’s not the case.
“There has been an increase since February of 2024 of your email going into the spam filter. And that is because Google and Yahoo both latched down on all of the spammy emails. And they want to authenticate your domain,” Kendra explained. “If you use a reputable service, like Constant Contact, ConvertKit, things like that, they’ll actually authenticate your domain for you, and actually tell you how to authenticate your domain.”
By taking these simple steps to authenticate your domain, you can ensure your emails are making it to the inbox, not the spam folder. And Kendra emphasizes that quality is key when it comes to your email list.
“I have found people with 200 people on their list that are more profitable with people with 8000. Because those 8000 aren’t relationships,” she said.
Myth #3: You Have to Give Away All Your Secrets
Many entrepreneurs are hesitant to give away too much valuable content for free, worried that they’ll be giving away all their secrets. But Kendra says that’s a myth that needs to be busted.
“Odds are, I can figure out what it is that you do by going on YouTube, right? Or I can listen to your stream of podcasts and I can figure out everything that you’re going to share with me,” Kendra said. “The reason I’m buying it is because I want it spoon fed to me. I want it in the way you’re going to teach it, I want to be able to ask clarifying questions, I don’t want to have to Google it.”
Your audience is looking for you to package up that valuable information in a way that saves them time and effort. By freely sharing your expertise through content like emails, podcasts, and social media, you’re actually building trust and positioning yourself as the go-to expert in your field.
“Trust me, I would say 99% of the information is out there. Don’t worry about that. People who want to do business with you are going to do business with you, the more you give freely,” Kendra advised.
Putting it All Together
So how can you put these email marketing insights into practice? Kendra recommends starting by focusing on the quality of your email list, not just the quantity.
“If you’ve got 8000 people on your email list, congratulations. I have found people with 200 people on their list that are more profitable than people with 8000, because those 8000 haven’t been taking care of their list,” she said.
In the end, the key to successful email marketing is to approach it with a mindset of providing value, not just making sales. By busting the common myths around email marketing and focusing on building genuine relationships with your subscribers, you can create an email strategy that truly resonates with your audience and drives real results for your business.
As Kendra Corman emphasized, email marketing is far from dead – in fact, it remains one of the most powerful and profitable marketing channels available. So don’t be afraid to experiment, get creative, and put these insider secrets to work for your podcast and business. With the right approach, your email list can become a valuable asset that keeps your audience engaged and your sales pipeline full.
