Have you ever stared at your podcast stats, wondering what all those numbers mean? If so, you’re not alone! As a fellow podcaster, I know how confusing it can be understanding podcast downloads, streams, and all the other metrics that come with the territory. It can feel like you’re speaking into a void, without clear feedback on whether your message resonates.
But what if I told you these numbers are the key to unlocking your podcast’s true potential? By understanding your podcast downloads, trends, and listener behavior, you can make informed decisions, tailor your content, and ultimately grow your audience.

Understanding Podcast Downloads, Trends, and More: Your Key to Podcasting Success
As a podcaster, it’s easy to feel like you’re putting in a lot of effort with little feedback on how your show is performing. But did you know analyzing your podcast analytics and metrics provides valuable insights that can help take your podcast success to new heights?
Let’s examine some of the most important podcast analytics and consider how to leverage them to improve your content strategy.
Why Your Podcast Hosting Platform is Your Best Friend
Your podcast hosting platform is like your command center. It’s where you upload your episodes and find most of your performance data.
Here’s what you should pay attention to:
Overall Downloads: This gives you a big-picture view of how many times your podcast has been downloaded across all episodes. It’s a good indicator of your overall reach.
Episode Downloads: Dig deeper into each episode’s performance by looking at downloads within the first 7 days, 30 days, or even longer. This helps you identify which episodes are resonating most with your audience.
Geographic Reach: Discover where your listeners are tuning in from. You might be surprised that your podcast has reached far-flung corners of the globe!
I recall a client feeling disheartened, thinking her podcast was small and insignificant. But her entire perspective shifted when I showed her the data revealing listeners in over 120 countries. That “little” podcast was making waves across continents!
The Power of Podcast Listening Apps
While your hosting platform provides valuable data, podcast listening apps offer a different layer of insight. These apps track demographic information about your listeners, such as their age range, gender, and interests.
One of the most powerful metrics you can glean from listening apps is the consumption rate. This tells you, on average, how much of each episode your listeners are actually consuming before they stop listening. It’s like a hidden treasure map, revealing where you might lose your audience’s attention.
Here’s a consumption rate on Apple Podcast:
To get here, you’ll log into your Apple Podcast dashboard. Select “Analytics” on the menu and then you’ll see an overview of your podcast stats.
You’ll need to select the “Episodes” tab to view all the episode average consumption rates. You’ll see those on the very right of the picture below. We’ve redacted the podcast information to keep the client anonymous.

To see the specific consumption of that episode, you would select the episode to see the picture below.
Pro Tip: Do you see that dip at about 4 minutes in? That’s a section that was skipped over.

Here’s a consumption rate on Spotify:
To get here, you’ll log into your Spotify podcast dashboard. Then you’ll need to go through each episode to get an idea of the consumption.
Select “Episodes” in the menu and select the episode you want to review. Scroll down a little and you’ll see something that looks like the picture below.
Pro tip: Review how guest episodes perform against your solo episodes. Or topics you want to know if they are ones your audience is interested in.

Turning Data into Actionable Insights
With this knowledge, you can make strategic decisions about your podcast. For example, if your consumption rate drops significantly after 30 minutes, consider shortening your episodes to keep listeners engaged. You know where to double down your efforts if you see a spike in downloads after a specific marketing campaign.
By consistently tracking your podcast stats, you can:
- Identify trends: Notice patterns in listener behavior, such as when they’re most likely to tune in or which topics resonate most strongly.
- Refine your content: Tailor your episodes to your audience’s preferences and keep them coming back for more.
- Measure marketing effectiveness: See which promotional strategies are driving the most downloads and adjust your approach accordingly.
- Feel more connected to your audience: By understanding who they are and what they like, you can create a stronger bond with your listeners.
